Every body has a unique story to tell, and hearing these stories is what makes bodywork such a rewarding pursuit. Bodywork is not my first career. In fact, it couldn't be much further removed: I earned my Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science in 1997 and immediately began my career in software engineering during the height of the .com boom. It was my involvement in AIDS/Lifecycle as a cyclist that led me to the bodywork profession. Like so many people, I had never received massage before, but a fateful trip to the massage tent during the ride sparked my interest in the work. What more fascinating outlet could there be for me? The human body is an amazing feat of engineering, with vast and inspiring complexity. The engineer in me longs to understand the various systems and how and why they work. The science of movement of the joints of the body present tremendous possibilities. The stress patterns and compensation patterns create elaborate puzzles just waiting to be unraveled. My creative side wants to explore and improvise new and interesting ways of working with the body. And my subconscious mind yearns to absorb the knowledge of all of the anatomy and make it available without thinking, transforming information into intuition. I first attended a Swedish Massage Intensive at the San Francisco School of Massage . Later I followed with workshops on Dynamic Stretching and Mobilization and Sports Massage. In 2005, I completed the Advanced Massage Therapist program. In 2007 I completed a 200-hour program in the Hendrickson Method ® of orthopedic massage, bringing my total clock hours of massage and bodywork training to 542. Listening to the stories each body has to tell and unlocking the patterns of distress to help the body find greater ease, comfort, and balance is my goal. |
